A regular meeting of the Business Council was held in the Waste Management sector

On 19.11.2022 a regular meeting of the Business Council was held in the city of Blagoevgrad in the Waste Management sector in the border regions of Blagoevgrad, Haskovo, Kardjali and Smolyan, and the activity is carried out under the project "Business Council - BC 6275" financed by the INTERREG V/A GREECE-BULGARIA program 2014-2020, Subsidy contract No. B6.3a.18/13.04.2021.

The meeting was attended by 6 representatives of the Waste Management sector from the border regions of Haskovo, Kardjali, Blagoevgrad and Smolyan. The hall in which the BS meeting was held was technically secured, being equipped with multimedia, a portable computer, a printer, as well as information boards, a banner and presentation materials, according to the requirements of the Interreg V/A Greece Program Communication and Publicity Guide- Bulgaria 2014-2020.

Those present at the meeting were unanimous that, unfortunately, Bulgarian citizens have no idea of how waste is managed. Although the municipal administrations claim that they inform the citizens of the respective municipality in the proper manner, there is still no noticeable improvement in the general culture of the population.

In this sense, the representatives of the sector share that there is a lack of effective information campaigns to reach people so as to make them rethink their actions regarding the generation of waste.

In the context of everything described above, the members of the BC on waste management shared their concerns that despite all the legislative and regulatory requirements, which are in line with the European ones, unfortunately Bulgaria does not cover even half of what it has set as implementation, and the problem according to experts, it is rooted in every single citizen.

The actions of the enterprise were also reported, considering that many of them do not dispose of waste according to the regulations.

In this regard, recommendations will be drawn up for conducting information campaigns in the municipalities, which will activate citizens for a more environmentally friendly way of life and the gradual introduction of the so-called "Zero waste" standard.
